Literacy Programs & Events

Read Across Kauai Day

at Kanuikapono 2:28:14Read Across Kauai Day is an annual event designated by Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho to increase awareness about the importance of literacy, provide an opportunity for children to interact with local authors, reinforce the importance of reading by encouraging creativity through writing and artistic expression,  and provide parents with information about the importance of reading to their children at home. Read Across Kauai Day is celebrated on the Friday closest to February 28th. Storybook Theatre sends authors to schools to read to children on a first come first served basis. Please contact Storybook Theatre to be placed on the waiting list.Storybook Theatre also maintains a pool of authors and professional storytellers that are available for the following literacy boosting programs:

Invite a local author or storyteller to read to your class.

Choose one of the local authors in Storybook's pool of authors and invite them to read to your class. Authors are equipped with artwork, book dummies, and publishing knowledge that can be shared with the class. Students should be prepared with questions to ask the authors.

Invite an author to walk your class through the process of writing, illustrating, and publishing their very own book.

Our author publishers will not only read to your class and tell your students about their publishing journey, but they will also walk your class through the process of writing, illustrating and publishing a book.

Invite an author educator to boost literacy skills with sign language.

Sign language provides a kinestetic sensory experience that helps children triple the number of connections made in the brain during a lesson. Author Monika Mira, will teach children all the signs for the ocean animals that are found in her award-winning title: Who Lives in the Sea? Ocean Animals of Hawaii. Then she will engage them with those signs during the reading of her book as well as other learning games, songs, and activities.
